Vor genau 150 Jahren meldete “Der Israelit, Central-Organ für das Orthodoxe Judentum”, vom 24. Oktober 1866 (5627) kurz:

“Augsburg, 15. Oktober – Herr J. Bachmann, Großhändler dahier, wurde zum Ersatzmann bei dem Kollegium der Gemeindebevollmächtigten und Herr J. Bauer, Banquier, als Ersatzmann beim hiesigen Magistrate gewählt.”

Rabbi Löw Memorial in Prague

Das 1910 vom Prager Bildhauer Ladislav Šaloun (1870-1946) geschaffene beim Neuen Rathaus (Nova Radnice) in Prag ist selbstredend kein historisches Abbild von Rabbi Jehuda ben Bezalel Löw Liwa (1522-1609), der Maharal, (מורנו הגדול רבי ליווא). Neben der schieren Höhe des Denkmals fallen als Nebenfiguren ein Hund und eine nackte Frau auf, die sich von zwei Seiten an den hohen Mann hängen, dessen zu klischeehaft geratene Nase sich über die Straße erhebt.

Der Allgemeinheit bekannt ist Rabbi Löw, dessen Grab am alten Friedhof eine Zirbelnuss krönt, vor allem für die Golem-Legende. In seinen umfangreichen, übrigens auch heute noch gut zu lesenden, Schriftwerk ist freilich nirgends von einem Golem die Rede, jedoch befasste sich ein Augsburger Vorfahr des Gelehrten aus der Kalonimos-Sippe bereits im 13. Jahrhundert mit der Frage, ob es möglich sei ein(en Golem als) künstliches Wesen zu erschaffen.

Ein Spaßmacher meinte mal dazu, das handfeste Ergebnis existiere noch heute sichtbar in Augsburg und sei seit einiger Zeit als „Steinerner Moa“  (Mann) bekannt, dem Generationen anderer Scherzbolde regelmäßig die Steinnase mit Feuerzeugen anschwärzen.
