Braunrind Illerbeuren

Swabian or Allgäuer (“allgoyer”) Braunrind or Braunvieh is the traditional brown livestock of Bavaria (Austria and Swiss). In 19th century many emigrants, among them many Jews (until 1870s at least three-fourths of the domestic cattle breed and trade was in Jewish hands)  brought braunvieh to the US where it was bred in higher numbers. When the Kingdom of Bavaria became part of Germany in 1870 cattle brute from the north cut out the “heimisch” breed.

When in Bavaria braunvieh was almost on the brink of extinction the cattle was reimported from the US and has been true-bred. At the farming museum (Bauernhofmuseum) of Illerbeuren near Memmingen a number of original Swabian braunvieh is ready to answer your questions (their common language by the way until today is sort of רער טאיטשע געייה – resp. taytsh lowing.
